As part of a broader organisational restructure, data networking research at Swinburne University of Technology has moved from the Centre for Advanced Internet Architecture (CAIA) to the Internet For Things (I4T) Research Lab.

Although CAIA no longer exists, this website reflects CAIA's activities and outputs between March 2002 and February 2017, and is being maintained as a service to the broader data networking research community.

Remote unix Learning Environment (RULE)

Feature Summary

This page sums up why RULE is the most versatile cost effective Unix education package available

  1. Flexibility
    1. Give students the opportunity to experience Unix as they would in the real world.
Configure common Unix services as they would be used on production servers.
    2. Teach Unix on preexisting Windows machines
    3. Allow students access to their Unix virtual hosts from any lab on campus, or from home (if VPN access is available)
    4. As virtual hosts can be assigned on a per student basis, students can make changes to their virtual host that will be persistent between labs
    5. Simplify class scheduling as any Windows lab can be a RULE lab
  2. Cost Effectivness
    1. No need to dedicate valuable space to dedicated Unix labs
    2. Make use of preexisting Windows computers without limiting their current functionality
    3. Simplify system administration by eliminating the need to maintain dual-boot configurations and centralizing Unix virtual hosts to a handful of machines
