As part of a broader organisational restructure, data networking research at Swinburne University of Technology has moved from the Centre for Advanced Internet Architecture (CAIA) to the Internet For Things (I4T) Research Lab.

Although CAIA no longer exists, this website reflects CAIA's activities and outputs between March 2002 and February 2017, and is being maintained as a service to the broader data networking research community.

Traffic Capture, Analysis and Classification Tools

As previously discussed, this project requires tools to both anaylse live and captured traffic over a network, and to classify traffic into different application classes. On this page you can find links to download software and tools that have either been developed in-house by the Centre for Advanced Internet Architectures or by the external community.

Developed by CAIA

  • NetSniff: A multi-layer, networked application, traffic capture and analysis tool. [Jason But, Urs Keller, 2004-2005]
  • SPP: Synthetic Packet Pairs - A tool to estimate the RTT between two endpoints
  • SIFTR: A FreeBSD kernel module that logs statistics on active TCP connections to a file developed as part of the NEWTCP project
  • Web object change interval estimation simulator (WOCIES) [Clancy Malcolm, September 2003]
  • YpFW: An ipfw frontend [Claudio Favi, January 2004]
  • CFTStat: A tool for passive TCP analysis, statistics and user's web experience gathering. Grab the original Tstat 0.92  (local copy, original site) and our set of CFTstat patch files. Or check the README first. [Claudio Favi, February 2004]
  • SWISS: Simple Web Inverted System Simulation [Wendy Vanhonacker, February 2004]

By the wider community

  • tcpdpriv - Anonymises packets. Fix required to operate on latest version of freeBSD
  • dsniff-2.3 - Performs Various operations on packets including sniffing URLs from HTTP traffic
  • hping - Sends packets in various protocols to test network latency
