As part of a broader organisational restructure, data networking research at Swinburne University of Technology has moved from the Centre for Advanced Internet Architecture (CAIA) to the Internet For Things (I4T) Research Lab.

Although CAIA no longer exists, this website reflects CAIA's activities and outputs between March 2002 and February 2017, and is being maintained as a service to the broader data networking research community.

RULE Upgrade

Type: Swinburne LTPF Funding Proposals
Amount: $ 22,000
Status: Current (Due to conclude in December 2009)
Abstract:

RULE is a system developed at Swinburne University to teach our Telecommunications students Unix based systems. It allows students to be allocated a number of virtual computers for the duration of the semester that can be used to install and create network services.

The existing RULE system is dated, beyond waranty and was't designed to cater for the ~100 students per semester that are now using RULE. The aim is to update RULE to the latest FreeBSD Unix releases, and to replicate the RULE hardware with server class hardware that is:

  • Under warranty
  • Can cope with a larger number of virtual hosts and students
  • Is backed up
